About

Hi, I'm John.

I'm the person you'd actually be working with — not a rotating cast of assistant engineers. Every mix that leaves Tobacco Road Studios has gone through my hands, start to finish.

Whether it's your first session or your fifth, you're getting the same ears and the same standard every time.

My Story

Why I do this

Tobacco Road Studios was founded with one goal: to make professional audio mixing accessible to independent artists. With a background in both live and studio production, I've mixed everything from gritty funk basslines to lush downtempo textures. Every mix is shaped by a love of music that runs deep and a relentless pursuit of clarity, depth, and vibe.

Mixing Philosophy
Metered Clarity

Every mix I do follows the same order, whether it's a full band or one voice and a guitar.

  1. Fix what's actually wrong first — rumble, harshness, mud.

  2. Control the dynamics, so the track is stable before I start shaping it.

  3. Only then does character get added.

  4. Enhancement comes last, and only if the song actually needs it.

  5. Nothing gets pushed so hard it risks clipping on the way out.

It's a simple order, but it's the difference between a mix that sounds intentional and one that's just been layered with effects until it sounds "produced." I'd rather solve a problem than cover it up.

The same thinking carries into how I build space. I don't drop one reverb on a mix and call it done — I build depth the way a real room has near surfaces and far ones, blending several distinct spaces together so the mix has actual dimension. And it doesn't stop at reverb — delays, saturation, modulation — each one gets used for a reason, not just reached for out of habit.

And every one of those decisions is made by ear — mine, not an algorithm's. No AI mixing or mastering tools touch your song at any point in the process.

How I Work

Collaborative, start to finish

I approach every project with curiosity and care. Whether you're sending raw multitracks or stems, I'll work closely with you to understand your sound, your vision, and your goals. Communication is key — you're part of the process every step of the way.

Supporting Emerging Artists

I believe in lifting up the next generation of musicians. That's why I offer discounted rates — and in some cases, pro bono mixing — for young artists and emerging talent who show real promise but may be working with limited resources.

If you're passionate about your music and ready to put in the work, I'm here to help you bring your sound to life. Reach out and let's talk about how I can support your project.
